GBE2 Blog On Prompt 65: First Day

Junie

She had expected to see more elle kids, but it was just humans in her class, except for the teacher and this one kid. He was a tiny little boy who looked too small for the desk he was sitting at--his feet didn’t even touch the ground, not really. He looked like he should be in kindergarten or something.

“I am eight years old and the correct height for my age,” the little boy whispered indignantly as she sat down.

Junie was startled--she hadn’t said anything out loud. She had known that elle could hear what people were thinking, but they weren’t supposed to pry. She recovered quickly though, shooting back with, “then you’re still too little for this class!” Everyone else in the class including her were eleven or twelve.

The elle actually hissed, a sharp, angry sound. “My mental and physical maturity put me in the correct comparative age range for this class,” the little boy snapped back. “And I’m not prying, you’re just loud.”

It was almost funny hearing so many big words coming out of such a tiny kid. Junie was about to say something back, but then the teacher was looming over both of them. “Miss Tomlin, Mister Ran, please take your fascinating conversation outside this class,” the teacher said. “We’ll review the class rules during break.”

There were some giggles as Junie got out of her seat, but the teacher glared the other kids silent as Junie and the little kid exited the classroom.

Ran

Ran had not expected the human children to be so loud. Not audio-loud, the decibel level was fairly normal, but they were mentally loud. His parents had warned him how loud humans were, and he thought he would be ready for it, but he was beginning to have second thoughts.

The overall noise was briefly overwhelmed by a human girl who was looking at him thinking, wow, he looks like he should be in kindergarten. Ran did not have a clear picture of what a “kindergarten” was, but the impression he got was that she thought he was too little to be in this class. Ran hissed. “I am eight years old and the correct height for my age,” he whispered at the human girl.

The girl jumped a little her thoughts very surprised, and maybe a little guilty. Then she whispered back, “then you’re still too little for this class.”

“My mental and physical maturity put me in the correct comparative age range for this class,” Ran snapped back. “And I’m not prying, you’re just loud.” The girl was grinning at him, and thinking how funny he was. He was planning on running right over whatever the girl was going to say next, but then the teacher was looming over both of them.

“Humans may be loud, but you are not exactly quiet right now, Ran,” the teacher said silently. Out loud, she said, “Miss Tomlin, Mister Ran, please take your fascinating conversation outside this class. We’ll review the class rules during break.”

Wanting very much to crawl under a rock somewhere and not come out until his mother arrived to pick him up, Ran followed the human girl out of the classroom.
