A Few Things To Stop Doing When You Find a Feminist Blog

Here is the thing, okay? Coming into a feminist conversation with, “Have you considered that sometimes women acquire free drinks at bars?” is like walking into graduate school during Philosophy finals and saying, “Have you considered that the color blue that I see may not be the color blue that you see?”
Imagine you are the guy who just walked into that Philosophy class and laid that shit down. Imagine the class full of students who have worked very hard and committed themselves and sacrificed to be here, students who have spent several years of their lives learning about this subject. Imagine now their feelings when you go to the head of the classroom with a smirk on your face and demand the professor give you an A for effort. Imagine now that they think you are a douchebag asshole, because they do, and because you are. You are a douchebag asshole because you are obviously so self-centered, arrogant, and completely ignorant of the world around you, that you thought you could walk into a high-level course with no background and no work and say something profoundly simplistic and totally unrelated and also everybody should congratulate you for having done this thing, so brave, so provocative.

This is a great post. Thought I'd share.

Tuesday Amazon Link Spam! Books

I get a small commission for the items that are purchased from these links. Theoretically, if enough people buy things from me, I become financially solvent.

War for the Oaks: A Novel
Emma Bull
List Price: $15.99
Price: $6.07
You Save: $9.92 (62%)
War for the Oaks is urban fantasy of the subset known as urban faerie. (While some more recent urban fantasy might tack on faeries in a mostly vampire and werewolf universe, this is primarily a novel dealing with Faerie and its intersection with the mortal world.) This novel originally came out in the 80’s. It has been reprinted by Orb books.

Norse Code
Greg Van Eekhout
Price: $7.99
Norse Code does some interesting things with Norse mythology. It also does some interesting thing for the urban fantasy genre in that it has a more serious feel to it than a lot of the urban fantasy I have read lately (which is to say I have been mostly running into paranormal romances lately). Despite many humorous and silly moments, this is a fairly serious story, which is fitting considering it is about Ragnarok.
Read the review here.

The Demon's Covenant (Demon's Lexicon)
Sarah Rees Brennan
Price: $9.99
The sequel to The Demon’s Lexicon is from the point of view of Mae, who is trying to deal with her very complicated life which has been made even more complicated by magic and the presence of Nick and Alanl Ryves. (She is also in the dog house with her mother Annabel, who it turns out, is not the kind of parent who would not care if her two children disappeared. She is just the kind of parent who deeply sucks at interacting with children. Unreliable narrators are not to be trusted and should not be trusted because they are unreliable.)

Elegy Beach
Steven R. Boyett
List Price: $7.99
Price: $6.29
You Save: $1.70 (21%)
Elegy Beach is the sequel to Ariel: A Book of the Change, and you might call it “Ariel, the Next Generation,” except it isn’t quite like that at all. Yes, the protagonist is the son of Pete Garey, the protagonist (and not quite hero) of Ariel, but the writer takes his own sweet time getting around to admitting that yes, Pete went and had a mini-me. The main plot of the story revolves around Fred going on a quest to stop his friend and fellow magic-user Yanamandra Ramchandani from accomplishing his goal of “correcting the Change” and turning everything back to “the way it was.”

On the Edge (The Edge, Book 1)
Ilona Andrews (Author)
Price: $7.99
On the Edge is Another “Bad Ass Babe Fantasy Romance. (I may have to change the name of the blog to Rena’s House of Ass-Kicking or something if the trend continues--and given a glance at my reading list, it probably will.) This one uses what at first looks like a white trash/hill billy version of the (eternal and immortal) romance trope where the Hero Must Tame/Woo the Tempestuous Wildcat Heroine. Only that’s not what it is at all. It’s something much different; it’s Lawman Uses Wildcat As Bait to Catch the Bad Guy and then Kind of Falls for Her, which makes it more interesting.

The Snow Queen's Shadow (PRINCESS NOVELS)
Jim C. Hines
Price: $7.99
The Snow Queen’s Shadow goes into some harrowing territory. When Snow attempts to save Queen Beatrice’s life with magic fails, it breaks her magic mirror. The mirror turns out to have been powered by a demon which is now loose and immediately takes possession of Snow. Under the demon’s influence she manages to infect Danielle’s husband Armand with the demon’s influence and kidnaps her son Prince Jakob.

GBE2 Blog On Prompt 53 “Pick a Line from a Book”

I picked a line from one of P.C. Hodgell’s Kencyr books. The original person speaking the line was not a large dog of indeterminate breed and unusual levels of sentience but a young noble who is an avid hunter. The poor boy keeps trying to kill critters the main character would prefer to be left unmolested.

“You never let me kill anything.” The Big Man was sulking in the corner on his sheepskin where he had been banished after his latest adventure. He was all curled up with his back pointedly turned in Sarah’s general direction. The dog had apparently decided to speak up since the silent treatment (punctuated by mournful sighs) was not working.

“I know--I am a terrible, terrible person,” Sarah said, looking up from the book she was reading. “Imagine me not wanting you to play Riki Tiki Tavi with a rattler. I’m so thoughtless!”

“It never would have got a fang in,” The Big Man whined. He rolled onto his back, the better to give her a pitiful look that hadn’t worked all that well when he was a puppy and didn’t work now that he was 130 lbs. of large black vaguely Shepherd-ish dog.

“You may be big and fast but there is more of you to potentially hit. You were basically playing rattler roulette.”

“Wasn’t.”

“Was.”

Things You Think of After the Fact

So, I will get started on writing projects, and then belatedly realize that I should have organized things differently, or I should have had an idea of how I wanted something organized to begin with. Case in point, I have just realized that I need to have an index that lists all of the book reviews I have cross-posted from my book blog to my profile on Yahoo Contributor Network. The sad part is, I could have thought of doing this back when there were maybe only ten or so book reviews on YCN. Now I have to go through all of my folders.

I am also eventually going to have to cross-post my entries from this blog and A Wicked Convergence of Circumstances to my Wordpress blog. And I need to play around with it some more because it still doesn't look quite right.  I also need to work on scheduling more tweets, which I should have done yesterday, but did not because I spent most of the day trying to find something I lost, and then trying to figure out how to replace it. There was also more Throwing Away of Stuff in preparation for the move.

I will probably try to put together a list of interesting posts/sites I've seen. And trying to write more Marcus on Monday. (There will not be a Marcus post today because I have spent most of the week dithering and packing.)

Friday Amazon Link Spam: Books!

I get a small commission for anything you buy from these links. If I get enough commissions I will theoretically become financially solvent. Click on the pictures to buy the book on Amazon.

The Course of Empire, by Eric Flint and K.D. Wentworth
Price: $7.99
The Course of Empire borrows from two staples of science fiction of the military SF persuasion. One is the story of Occupied Earth, where a successful invasion by aliens results in drastic social changes and desperate rebellion. The other story is the one where humans get used by the aliens as soldiers in a war with yet another group of aliens. (With a possible third from the storyline that goes “once upon a time there was an alien race used by another alien race as slave-soldiers, but then the soldiers rebelled and Stuff Happened.”)

Read the review here.

Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor
Price:
$12.23
Akata Witch reminds me a little bit of both Harry Potter and the Young Wizards series. It manages to do this despite the part where Akata Witch is not actually like either except in the very vaguest ways. (I have to say some of it also reminds me of Nina Kiriki Hoffman’s books.) This book is one of your “young person discovers that magic exists and learns to use it, being moderately to extremely heroic along the way,” type novels and is atypically typical of the subgenre.

Read the review here

Spirits That Walk in Shadow by Nina Kiriki Hoffman
Price:
8.99 (kindle)

In this book we are reintroduced to Jaimie Locke, one of the minor characters from The Thread That Binds the Bones. She is still in recovery from having been trained to be evil by her previous teacher. (She more or less indicates this on a number of occasions.)

Heartless by Gail Carriger
Price:
$7.99
In Heartless, Alexia and her husband have mended their fences and now they have to figure out how to keep the vampires from continuing their vendetta against Alexia and her not-yet-born infant-inconvenience. The solution presents itself in the form of Akeldama stepping forward with an offer to adopt the baby (thus assuring that the scary monster baby has a proper upbringing). Of course, this creates a new batch of problems involving Conall’s pack having to move into the city. (Alexia might have very little in the way of maternal feelings, but she does feel a certain amount of interest in the results of her pregnancy.)

Read the review here.

The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner
Price:
$6.80
In The King of Attolia, Eugenides has to figure out how to be king, when all he wanted was the queen. (Unfortunately, the queen and the gods are not letting poor Eugenides off the hook.) The Queen of Attolia’s subjects aren’t very enthused by the idea of Eugenides being their king and proceed to cause him a great deal of grief. The palace staff and even his attendants are harassing him, the nobility is on the very edge of insurrection, and there are conspiracies and assassins everywhere. On top of all that, Eugenides must also get used to being married to the woman he loves, who is also the Woman Who Did Very Bad Things to Him in A Very Public Way. (Eugenides and Irene have an extremely complicated and slightly frightening relationship.)

Discount Armageddon by Seanan McGuire
Price:
$7.99
This is the first book in a new urban fantasy series, InCryptid. It has a much more humorous tone than the grittier and darker Toby Daye novels and has a few romantic sub plots worked into both the main story and the back story. It is about a family of cryptozoologists whose ancestors decamped from a monster hunting organization known as the Covenant of St. George. The Covenant believes that all “unnatural” creatures should be exterminated, but the Prices believe they should be studied, and only hunted down if individuals prey on humans.

GBE2 Blog On Prompt 52 “Guilty Pleasure”

For this prompt, I wasn’t sure whether to put it on A Wicked Convergence of Circumstances (my science fiction/fantasy media and meta blog) or here on Near Life Experiences (which is a more general purpose blog). That is because this particular guilty pleasure relates both to writing and experience and to meta and media related to science fiction and fantasy. I will probably go with cross-posting to both journals, just because.

I did not expect to like this as much as I did since I was a big time Forever Knight fan (or as much of a fan as you could be when the show was on late at night and nearly impossible to find half the time) and was bitterly disappointed when the series ended. Angel seemed too much like a ripoff concept to me, even if the character was from a series I liked.

Angel - Season Two (Slim Set) (1999)
David Boreanaz (Actor) | Rated: Unrated | Format: DVD
List Price: $39.98

You Save: $41.83 (70%)

This was another series I was not initially interested in! I was drawn in by the character interactions I was seeing when I'd stop on the show while channel surfing. What sealed the deal was having a friend who was completely in love with the series, and would talk non-stop about it.

Andromeda - The Complete First Season (Boxset)
Format: DVD
Price: $39.59 & this item ships for FREE with Super Saver Shipping. Details

Andromeda: A series I started to like because I was reading some really awesome episode synopses and fanfic. :D I have seen most of the second, third and fourth seasons though the hours it was one were usually incompatible with the hours I worked. The quality goes downhill for each season until the fifth season which was so horrible I couldn't watch after the first episode.

Marcus on Monday: Meditation 4:17

Last week I skipped because I did not realize I had already written one of these out. Also, I was having some Frantic Flailing and Panicking to get out of the way.

Live not as though there were a thousand years ahead of you. Fate is at your elbow; make yourself good while life and power are still yours.

It seems to me that most people end up living from moment to moment. They are not able to plan very far ahead because the situation they are in is too unstable. They may also lack the ability to organize their lives for one reason or another. Having been (and being in) that situation makes you wish you had a few hundred years of breathing space, but I can’t really think of anyone who has ever been in a situation where they actually did have all the time they needed on their hands.

GBE2 Blog On Prompt 51 "Parody"

This is for GBE 2 Prompt 51

"Weird Al" Yankovic is one of my favorite musician-parodists! His songs are great and never fail to make me laugh. This song is a particular favorite because when I was a kid, I was a big fan of the Transformers cartoon and the movie. (Which is where this song appears.)

Financial Hardship Whining Tuesday...

Yesterday was an adventure. And by adventure I actually mean it was aggravating, stressful and extremely stupid. You see, due to financial hardship I am going to be moving back in with my parents. This means most of yesterday I was on the phone trying to change my address  and navigate my bank's phone system when I lack a phone id number. I also had to arrange for the phone and utilities to be turned off.

The first thing I did was finally answer my career services adviser at my old school, letting her know about a) the financial hardship and b) this is pretty much why I hadn't contacted her.  The next thing I did was turn in my 30 notice with my apartment complex. Since I was about a week late, I had to pay for a week's worth of rent. Then I went grocery shopping! After grocery shopping I came back and arranged to have my mail sent to the new address. Then I arranged to have my  phone and electricity turned off on the 31st. Then I called up the bank where I had the aforementioned adventures with the phone system.

My phone adventure was something like this:
